Early Beginnings
Before settlers came to Mesquite, TX, the area was an open prairie home to indigenous peoples, including the Ionies, Tawakonies, and Caddo. Mesquite was a key trading ground for these tribes. Here’s a brief timeline of Mesquite’s initial settlement:
- 1873: Texas and Pacific Railroad Agent A.R. Alcott filed the first plat for the township of Mesquite in Dallas County.
- 1873-1887: The new township of Mesquite was home to a few small businesses on Front Street, including a blacksmith, saloon, post office, and confectionery, as well as a few homes.
- 1887: Mesquite was the second town to incorporate outside of Dallas proper.
- The arrival of the railroad helped drive commerce and population growth and set the stage for the dynamic city it is today.
- 1901: An official town square was created, providing more space for business growth.
For most of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Mesquite flourished as a farming community. After World War II, however, It began transforming from a rural farming community into a thriving suburban city.
- Why Is It Named Mesquite?
No one knows for sure why it’s called Mesquite, but it’s likely that the many Mesquite trees in the area had something to do with the name’s inspiration.
The Rodeo Capital of Texas
When you think of Texas, you probably think of cowboy culture—and Mesquite is at the heart of it! Known as the “Rodeo Capital of Texas,” the city has been a hub for rodeo fans since the Mesquite Championship Rodeo began in 1958. Over the years, this legendary rodeo has hosted thousands of visitors, bringing the excitement of bull riding, barrel racing, and roping to North Texas. Today, it’s one of the most well-known rodeo venues in the country, preserving Texas tradition while entertaining new generations.

Where Does Solterra Texas Come In?
Long before Solterra Texas, the land was originally home to Lucas Farms, an agricultural enterprise founded in 1929 by Faithon P. Lucas. Over the past two decades, city leaders sought the right development opportunity—one that would honor the site’s history while supporting Mesquite’s growth. In 2019, they found the perfect match with Huffines Communities and their vision to build Solterra Texas. Working closely with the Lucas family during the planning process, the vision for Solterra Texas took shape, all while preserving the site’s history, native pecan groves, orchards, and pastures. The need for a mixed-use development that would benefit the growth and appeal of Mesquite was met (and even surpassed) with what has become Solterra Texas.
