From Black Hills to Heath: A Glimpse Into the Past
Before it was known as Heath, the area was simply called Black Hills, named after the dark, fertile soil that early settlers were drawn to. Wild buffalo once roamed these lands, and by the mid-1800s, the promise of farming and open skies began attracting settlers from across Texas.
Throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area saw slow but steady growth, with new businesses, schools, and key infrastructure like Barnes Bridge attracting more settlers. However, the town also faced setbacks, including three major fires beginning in 1916 that damaged much of its early business district.
A Town That Stood the Test of Time
Heath’s evolution mirrored that of many small towns—prosperity followed by challenges, and eventually, new beginnings. By the 1920s, many younger residents had moved to larger cities in search of work. Farming became less viable for small families, and growth slowed. It wasn’t until 1959, when Heath officially incorporated, that things began to change.
Lake Ray Hubbard
The creation of Lake Ray Hubbard in 1969 reshaped the landscape and brought incredible opportunities for Heath, TX. The city now had both rural charm and waterfront living, and by the 1970s, more newcomers were moving to Heath for the wide-open spaces, natural beauty, and proximity to Dallas.
